Flat-Towing will Require a Tow Bar
It will be necessary to install a tow bar for proper flat-towing of the F-150 behind an RV or motorhome. A tow bar is a tool that attaches to a base plate and provides an efficient method to tow your vehicle behind an RV or motorhome.
The tow bar is an easier alternative to a tow dolly and may be a less expensive investment. Once installed, the tow bar is easier and quicker to disconnect a towed vehicle than a dolly.
A tow bar is mounted to the towing vehicle, and tow bar arms are attached to the Ford F-150 with a quick connect/disconnect. The tow arms use an integrated coupler that is mainly hidden on the F-150.
Tow bars provide additional features compared to other methods, including:
- A. The tow arms are self-aligning and automatically lock into place when connecting the F-150 to help center the vehicle while towing.
- B. While on uneven ground, pivot joints allow the tow arms to be easily connected/disconnected.
- C. Easy to use non-binding release latches provide an easy disconnect from even and uneven ground.
Tow Bars Require a Base Plate Kit
The base plate requires a vehicle-specific plate that attaches to the Ford F-150 attachment points. Using the correct attachment points is essential to maintain vehicle structural integrity.
The F-150 haS three different base plate variations that include:
-
Blue Ox Base Plates
Two lugs are interlocking with existing lugs at the end of the tow bar. Make sure and follow up with a pin with a retaining clip. -
Roadmaster Base Plate
A quick disconnect attaches the crossbar and tow bar to the base plates. -
Demco Base Plates
Two-pronged ends slide around to secure the tow bar's arm extensions. A pin and clip should be used to secure the connection.
