Coming into the new model year, the Transit cargo van and Transit passenger van both get standard LED cargo lights and new options, such as heated seats and power-retractable running boards. The smaller Transit Connect van adds Ford SYNC 3 infotainment, new features on the wagon model and additional standard safety tech.

Features & Highlights

Both the Transit cargo van and passenger van are offered in standard- and long-wheelbase models and low-, medium- or high-roof body styles. An extended-length model is also available on both grades. On the cargo van, this body style can carry 14-foot pipes and lumber.

Designed for business owners with hauling needs, the Transit cargo van can also carry 10-foot-long items inside the shortest version of the van, and it can accommodate workers reaching 6'5" in high-roof examples. Additionally, the van is offered with vinyl seating, a spray-in liner, navigation, a hinged passenger door and full power accessories.

The Transit passenger van, available in XL and XLT trims, features 60/40-split passenger-side doors, a sliding door on select models and a six-speaker audio system. It can also seat up to 15 passengers depending on which trim you choose.

Offered in XL, XLT and a wagon-only Titanium trim, the Transit Connect is offered with dual sliding rear doors, cargo tie-down hooks, fold-down passenger seats, shelving, dual-zone automatic climate control and keyless entry. The smallest version of the van features 103.9 cubic feet of space, while the largest offers 128.6 cubic feet of cargo room.

Performance Perks

The 2017 Ford Transit in Peoria is available with multiple engines. The cargo and passenger vans get a standard 3.7L V6, delivering 275 hp and 360 lb.-ft. of torque. However, buyers can opt for a turbo 3.2L five-cylinder diesel, generating 185 hp and 350 lb.-ft. of torque or a turbo 3.5L V6, producing 310 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed automatic is mated to all powerplants.

Transit Connect gets a 2.5L four-cylinder, pumping out 169 hp and 171 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is also mated to a six-speed automatic. With the engine, the van can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

Payloads for both cargo and passenger vans can reach 4,650 pounds. Towing capacity maxes out at 7,500 pounds.

Safety Tech

Both versions of the vehicle come with antilock brakes, airbags, stability control and a rearview camera, while lane departure warning and rear parking sensors are optional. Connect receives many of the same standards, including hill-start assist.
